Great news for ballet and dance enthusiasts! The Asian world premiere of the St Petersburg Theatre Russian Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty, originally slated for 11 and 12 October 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, will have two new shows added.
The Sleeping Beauty ballet was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia in 1890, which many would consider as the Golden Age of Russian ballet. It features a musical score by legendary Russian classical composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as well as an enchanting choreography by French-Russian ballet master Marius Petipa. A full team of 37 Russian ballerinas including principal dancers Anna Voitina and Aleksandr Voitin (who will play Princess Aurora and Prince Desire respectively) will be showcasing their talent in executing the technically challenging original choreography.
The world-renowned St Petersburg Theatre have toured over 130 cities including those in Finland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Canada, China and the United States of America to over one million audiences, performing 250 sold-out performances of The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle and Don Quixote. The Sleeping Beauty show will take place on 11, 12 and 13 October 2019 at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The wonderful news was announced at the Official Media Announcement of the Asian World Premiere of The Sleeping Beauty at Mandarin Oriental Hotel earlier today. Officiating the event was YBhg Datuk Isham Ishak, Secretary General of Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. He said, “I am honoured to announce that The Sleeping Beauty is the first international event held in Malaysia preceding next year’s Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign. This event will create hype among domestic and international tourists and will present Malaysia as THE travel destination in 2020.”
The show is jointly organised by The Dance Company, which aims to place Malaysia on the international dance map with international collaborations and exchanges. According to co-founder Audrey Kwan, “The additional two shows for The Sleeping Beauty have been added at 3pm and 8.30pm, which makes it a total of four show slots. This decision to add a third day was made due to the overwhelming ticket sales.”
The Dance Company is also organising a ticketing competition for those who have purchased The Sleeping Beauty tickets. The grand prize winner will win a 5-days 4-night trip to Russia, which includes flights, hotels and tickets to watch the St Petersburg Theatre Russian Ballet at the Palace Theatre. More details will be announced via TicketCharge’s website and social media channels soon.
