As I laze away in a hammock on Klong Muang beach, Krabi, Thailand, I am comfortably veiled from the sun’s scorching heat by a majestic row of palm trees at my weekend escape, Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort. Owned and operated by the prestigious Dusit International hospitality brand, the resort is a tropical beachfront property that offers 240 suites spread across 40 acres of grassy landscape.
The five-minute walk back to my room leads me pass small shrubs, bushy willows and calm lotus ponds. This same tranquil atmosphere is masterfully replicated in the resort’s seven room categories. My Deluxe Room (42 square metres) has a minimalist design and features coastal colours like cyan, ochre and beige, with subtle white accents that give it a bright and cheerful character. It comes with modern amenities such as an 18-inch flat-panelled TV and coffeemaker, while the attached bathroom features a porcelain bathtub, marble dresser and an enclosed shower. As Dusit International champions sustainability, suites at Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort are eco- friendly; my room features paper straws, glass decanters (instead of plastic bottles) and energy-saving LED lights.
From my room’s balcony, I easily spot snorkelers, paddleboarders, windsurfers and kayakers having a ball in the waters fringing Dusit Thani’s 1.8 kilometres private stretch. Filled with curiosity, I head towards the action and learn that they are, in fact, guests of Dusit Thani, making full use of available water sports facilities that include Hobie wave catamaran sailing, which I am told is a go-to family activity.
Dusit Thani also welcomes guests to lounge away at the Family Clubhouse that also houses the Kidz R Kids Club. Here, families enjoy activities like batik painting and balloon modelling under the tutelage of Dusit Thani’s trained daycare professionals who offer babysitting services at the venue, which features an outdoor playground, toys, books, and gaming consoles.
Dusit Thani offers eight dining options, three of which are staple restaurants; Mangosteen serves up Western and Indian cuisine for breakfast and dinner, while Limoncello is the hotel’s Italian eatery, open for lunch and dinner. My personal favourite is Malati, which plates up delicious Thai cuisine. Malati’s khao yam pak tai dish is a hearty and piquant indulgence of shredded coconut root, lemongrass, pomelo, mangoes and carrots, sprinkled with fish powder and savoured with sweet Thai fish sauce.
To work off feasts, the hotel’s 24-hour DFiT Fitness Centre is the place to incinerate calories. The centre features a fully-equipped gym, badminton court, table tennis area and a full-size muay Thai kickboxing ring. They even have a mini archery range! With its wide range of activities catering for all the colourful characters you’d find in a family, Dusit Thani really is a great escape for all ages.
