A Day Trip with Donan Isaribi Railway

Passengers mainly take this service to get to the Hokkaido Shinkansen. There are a total of 12 stations on this route and the journey takes about an hour. If you have some time before your Shinkansen departs or you plan to do a day trip, then this option is highly recommended.

Some of the stops have interesting and unique sites. Plan your trip accordingly if you wish to visit some of these attractions as there are no day passes available yet.

H74 Goryōkaku

Goryōkaku is a star fort city that looks very similar to a shuriken. Go up the observatory and you’ll get a spectacular view of the surrounding area. The park is also a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing during Spring.

sh10 Higashi-kunebetsu

The first thing you’ll notice when you get off the train is the strange shape of the station, it’s actually a container. And a short walk away is FukuFuku. This is an onigiri and daifuku mochi shop which uses locally sourced ingredients.

sh09 Kunebetsu

Step back in time at this theme park that reproduces the life of Matsumae during the Edo period. There are a total of 14 buildings including a banya (guard station), merchant houses and samurai houses. Make sure to try on a samurai armour or merchant kimono while you’re here.

sh06 Moheji

Located 20 minutes away from Moheji Station is Yafurai Tenmangu Shrine. It was erected in the 15th Century to worship Lord Sugawara Michizane, revered in Shinto as the God of learning.

sh05 Oshima-tobetsu

The church known as Tobetsu Trappist Monastery is located 20 minutes away on foot. However, do take note that only males are permitted to enter but that shouldn’t stop you from taking the journey there. If you have a sweet tooth you will be rewarded with the famous cookies and butter produced by Tobetsu Trappist Monastery. The soft serve ice-cream also uses the butter giving you more reasons to head over there.

sh01 Kikonai

This is where the Hokkaido Shinkansen merges with the old line and connects you to the rest of Japan.
