In conjunction with the ASEAN Day celebrations in Bangkok, Thailand, AirAsia has just unveiled a brand new ‘Sustainable Asean’ livery on its Airbus A320 aircraft, which features the ASEAN Chairmanship logo and the best of Asean tourism icons.
The new livery is aimed to advance and support AirAsia’s sustainable partnership with all 10 Southeast Asian countries while advancing its mission of creating a globally recognised ASEAN brand.
The launch was witnessed by Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Vijavat Isarabhakdi, and Director General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thailand Dr Suriya Chindawonogse, along with AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
During his speech, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said, “As a truly Asean airline, we’re thrilled to showcase what makes our home special on one of our aircraft, and to reiterate our ongoing commitment to sustainability. It’s a beautiful, courageous artwork and we hope it catches people’s eye and sparks a conversation about the benefits and impact sustainable travel has on the 650 million people who call Asean home.”
Tan Sri Tony also congratulated Thailand on its successful chairmanship of ASEAN for this year. He added that AirAsia’s biggest role is to promote what sustainability means. The airline will still continue its work in building better cooperation and integration for initiatives like sustainable tourism.
He said that sustainability is not just caring for the environment but also about protecting local communities, cultures and the livelihood of the local people.
While delivering his speech, Mr Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thailand, said that 44 million people transit in Asean yearly and as the Chairman of ASEAN for 2019, Thailand’s priority is to drive sustainability in all dimensions.
Over the years, AirAsia has engaged in a host of sustainability efforts including guest education, carbon reduction and waste management, the separation of recyclable items on board, and community-based tourism programmes such as JourneyD, which helps Thai communities develop their local products and enhance their English language skills. The award-winning airline has also fostered social enterprise initiatives across the region through the AirAsia Foundation, its philanthropic arm.
The new Sustainable Asean aircraft will be based in Kuala Lumpur, from where it will fly to more than 50 destinations across the 10 ASEAN member nations. Another Airbus A320 aircraft with the Sustainable Asean livery, which will be based in Bangkok, is expected to be launched later in the year.
